Announcing the establishment of the NSW Regional Cancer Research Network

By Elianne Renaud posted 13-12-2022 03:26 PM

It gives us great pleasure to announce the establishment of the NSW Regional Cancer Research Network.

The NSW Regional Cancer Research Network has been established by NSW Regional Health Partners to build capacity in translational cancer research across the geographical area covered by the Central Coast, Hunter New England, Mid-North Coast and Northern NSW Local Health Districts. Over the next 4 years we will support and develop cancer research across these regions.

The NSW Regional Cancer Research Network, with support from our project management team, will make the path to research impact more accessible for all cancer researchers in our regions. We will provide network members with access to specialist research assistance and the support necessary to enable clinicians and healthcare workers in our regional areas to lead their own research projects.

We invite you to consider joining the network if you are involved in any aspect of cancer care, cancer research or cancer training. The network is inclusive of anyone interested in joining and we have a strong commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Details on how to join the network are included below and available on our website. We have several exciting initiatives that will be rolled out through the network to our members in 2023, including:

  • Funding and research support for ‘shovel ready’ projects
  • Funded Clinical Fellowships
  • Recruitment of a Research Associates team to work directly with clinicians and healthcare workers to design, develop and implement locally informed research projects
  • Opportunities and support for targeted collaborative research in regional cancer services that will deliver improved outcomes to people living with cancer in regional communities.

We recognise the vital role consumers have in the design, direction, and outcomes of research programs. We encourage cancer consumers from across the regions to also join the network.

On a more personal note, I grew up in regional NSW and regularly visit my extended family across areas of Northern and Southern NSW. I am delighted to have the opportunity to join NSW Regional Health Partners to deliver improved health outcomes for the communities that I have lived in and shared experiences with throughout my life.

Professor Nikola Bowden

The NSW Regional Cancer Research Network is funded by the Cancer Institute NSW through a Translational Cancer Research Capacity Building Grant and established through NSW Regional Health Partners.
